University of Victoria

Victoria, BC, Canada

I am Professor of Economics at the University of Victoria, where I have served as Chair of the Department of Economics between 2021 and 2026. My research focuses on econometrics and empirical macroeconomics, including monetary policy identification, DSGE modelling, international macroeconomics, empirical finance and climate econometrics. I also dabble in economic history and musicology in my spare time.

Before moving to Victoria, I was at the University of Surrey, where I served as Head of the School of Economics (2013–15), Co-director of the Centre for International Macroeconomic Studies (2010–20), and Director of Learning and Teaching (2018–19). My continuing research affiliations include the Bank of Portugal and NIPE at the University of Minho.

My current projects investigate monetary policy shocks and identification with heterogeneous instruments; the macroeconomic transmission of sanctions and trade barriers; open-economy pricing and policy design; and persistent cycles in macroeconomic and paleoclimate series. I also work on economic history and the consequences of trade, disease and conflict.
